About

Mathilde Burkard is a designer and illustrator based in Paris.

A childhood spent between places as varied as Mauritius, Austria (Vienna), Paris and Haiti, as well as family holidays in Provence, Périgord and Alsace, have nurtured her imagination and cultivated her taste for the exotic. Her passion for drawing and painting was evident from an early age.

After studying Literature at the Sorbonne, Mathilde went on to study Fashion,Graphic Design and Illustration at the Parsons School of Design in Paris and New York, where she was honoured with the Outstanding Student Award.

Mathilde refined her skills and expertise as a designer for Tai Ping Carpets, collaborating with leading interior designers on exceptional residential and hotel projects, including for Hermès, Louis Vuitton, the George V Hotel, and the Peninsula Hotel.

In 2019, Mathilde founded her own studio dedicated to the creation of bespoke patterns and decors for interior design. She collaborates with prestigious houses known for their rich history and exceptional craftsmanship, and that value excellence and exceptional quality.

Creative approach and Inspirations

Driven by a profound  ambition to create beauty, Mathilde explores various modes of expression. She seamlessly transitions between figurative and abstract styles, minimalism and flamboyance, narrative and contemplative. With a deep respect for each setting, she approaches every new project with a fresh perspective, viewing each creation as a complement to an existing environment.

Mathilde values the constraints of materials and techniques, seeing them as opportunities for experimentation and creativity. These constraints enable her to blend the skills of both artist and craftsman, in the tradition of Decorative Arts.

Her compositions combine poetic lines with modern technology, where the lightness of hand-drawn elements harmonises with strong, clean lines. She has a predilection for intense colours, using them to infuse a theatrical flair into her spaces.

Her inspirations are diverse, ranging from vegetal and animal patterns to astronomy and geology, and from geometry and music to contemporary dance and theater. In the realm of Fine Arts, she draws on influences such as the ornaments of Antiquity, the colours of the Quattrocento, Persian miniatures, Baroque, Art Deco, and certain contemporary architectural styles, to name but a few themes.
